It is ironic that white is the cover of the rich, as white also represents purity and innocence, and the rich cannot ever be pure or innocent. In the immoral, corrupt society of the rich in The Great Gatsby, the meaning of the color white seems defiled by it's improper usage.

In the book white does represent purity just as it does on the American flag. White represents prosperity and riches and obedience. However the rich cannot be pure. Money actually corrupts people.

its ironic the fact that rich as in money can cover up a poor or any type of person.

i think that the white is suppose to be the cover up for the bad thing like on an egg the white is pure and clean but on the inside it is all nasty

it was previously stated that white was meant to be innocense, how could it also be a cover up for their filthiness? In my opinion,it would be the atmosphere occuring at that time for the innocence or "cover up" to show in the individual.
